What's A Textbook?

Speak to me of what defines a textbook to you. Comment, please?

  1. Textbooks attempt to say 'everything' that can be said within the space it provides for itself. That is a silly task; what textbooks should do in my opinion is to provide enough information for further investigation instead of painting with wide strokes about its subject matter. Textbook isn't defined by anything, it's an empty signifier that needs to be filled in with something that attempts to instigate curiosity instead of providing an 'easy' answer for the complex matters that it discusses. Textbooks seem to foster retention instead of critical thought.
